About Susan Sam
I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. In 1985, my husband and I moved to rural Michigan where I developed an interest in nature photography. My photographs have been displayed in juried exhibitions, published in local newspapers, and my picture of a red-legged locust appears in Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia.
In 2003 the first groundhog, named Wilhelmina, arrived on our property. I found her intriguing and became committed to studying this often elusive animal. For over 18 years, groundhogs have been my primary photographic interest. I observe and document their wild lives from the time they emerge from hibernation until it's time for them to snuggle up into their burrows again for their winter sleep. Our house is a photographer's blind. Central to many of their activities, I am able to photograph their natural behavior through the windows of our home.
In recent years, I've written two kid's books. The first "The Amazing Groundhogs of Woodchuck Wonderland" was published in 2018. The second "A Most Unusual Groundhog Story" was published in January of 2022.
Apart from woodchucks, I also enjoy observing and photographing other wildlife, reading, listening to music, and spending time with my co-author husband and groundhog project partner, Joseph.
